When Maria first came to our clinic, she wasn’t smiling. In fact, she was in a lot of pain from several cavities and an infected tooth. Her parents didn’t have the money to pay for her care, but they had heard that we would not turn them away.
Today, Maria has a healthy, happy smile and you made that happen. Your gifts to both our emergency fund and our preventive educational program have helped Maria and her family. Now, she visits our clinic every six months with her mother and brother. They receive free dental supplies and they have learned from our dental educators how to brush their teeth and floss, and why fruit is a better choice than candy for a snack.
For every child like Maria there is another whose smile is not so healthy or happy. In fact, dental disease is the most common chronic childhood disease and those that live in poverty have twice as many dental cavities as other children. As a supporter of Community Dental Care, you know that our mission is to ensure equal access to quality dental care and preventive education for all. However, not everyone in our community has equal access. There are many children and adults — many more since the recession began — that cannot afford dental care, even when they are in pain.
Our clinic policy is to never turn away anyone that needs emergency dental treatment but cannot pay. One of our three community programs — our emergency care mini-grant fund — ensures that those most in need, often children and the homeless, receive care. Your donations during the past year helped provide care for over 270 patients!
Your donations also supported our Program for Improving Community Oral Health, providing preventive oral health education, both at our two clinics and at outreach sites, for over 5,000 children like Maria. Additionally, through our student training program, we once again collaborated with local dental schools to provide training for 85 dental hygiene, dental assistant and advanced dental therapist students.
Our work through these three community programs takes enormous commitment from our staff and funding to continue them. This Christmas season, we have received a generous donation from an anonymous donor to match every dollar donated between now and January 31, up to $30,000. This is a tremendous opportunity for Community Dental Care and we need your help to meet this match! You may designate your gift for one of our programs, or allow us to use it where it is most needed. Please give what you can, and thank you for remembering Community Dental Care during this holiday season.
We wish you and your family blessings for the New Year!
